What started out as a peaceful snack time in the ferry cafeteria ended up as a terrifying ordeal. This incredible footage was captured on a ferry in Hamburg in 2022. The incident happened as Storm Ylenia battered northern Germany. You can clearly see the waves pounding the exterior of the ferry. Suddenly, there is a huge surge and the windows turn completely gray. If that is not terrifying enough, one wave smashes through the window and frothy water surges into the boat. Terrified passengers race to gather up their belongings and get out of there as quickly as they can. As the clip at the bottom of this page shows, you should always expect the unexpected when you are traveling during a storm!
Storm Ylenia was a weather event that occurred across northern Germany in February 2022. It caused both travel chaos and power outages. Sadly, at least two people also died after being struck by falling trees.
During the event, wind speeds of up to 95 mph were recorded. Multiple train services were canceled and there was widespread disruption. Many airlines also had to cancel flights because it was simply not safe enough for them to take off. During the height of the storm, residents were advised to stay indoors and to keep away from scaffolding and powerlines.
High winds and rain were accompanied by flooding. There are multiple images online depicting the damage caused by storm Ylenia but this footage of the smashed ferry window is one of the most dramatic. It was captured on the Elbe River.
